I am trying this. After making the USB installation, hopefully I can just upgrade the Notebooks on the domain that qualifies. Thanks for the link. I download the bit tool, and the installer prompted me with “What would you like to do now? I chose “Upgrade this PC now” and the update is downloading as we speak I’ll let you know how it goes. I didn’t have to build boot media or anything. Update: The Windows 10 Update Tool linked above worked like a charm. My upgrade finished and I’m rocking Windows 10 now upgraded from 8.
Going through the same process on my laptop also 8. This looks to be the winning method for us domain users looking to do upgrades. PS – Windows 10 is awesome. Nothing particularly earth-shattering, but lots of little niceties. Gonna enjoy getting to know this one! I have been using the preview version for a while on another workstation and I do like it! I did not have to enter a key for the in-place upgrade option.
I assume it would work with your 8. I’m giving it a go now as well on my 8. I was never on the “8 is evil” wagon but the novelty is wearing off, so onward and upward. Has anyone dived in there yet? It used the existing key on my 8. I verified that my system still shows “Activated” from System Settings. The little things just add up to one cohesive, well-thought-out OS. Aero snap to quadrants has to be my favorite addition, since I’m an aero-snap-aholic. Now with 3 large screen monitors I can have 12 discrete windows up at all times with plenty of real estate. Windows suddenly got way more productive for obsessive million-windows-and-tabs users like myself.
I’m actually using the UWP Mail and Calendar apps in lieu of Outlook — they’re cleaner, faster, and easier to parse visually. The new start button works awesome assuming you have less than apps and the quick search stuff is really nice. The Windows update interface is improved and gives better control about scheduling restarts. Edge browser is surprisingly great.
I could realistically see it becoming my daily driver, once it gets extensions — until then it’s not much use I neeeeeed LastPass integration.
Oh, and let’s not forget about the new CMD tricks. The update left me with zero issues, everything works perfectly. My system seems faster than ever, in fact. Took forever to install, but all went well.
I had low res and only one monitor after the upgrade. Going to Device Manager and letting Windows 10 upgrade the driver from there worked. I’m back to full rez and have two monitors again. Brand Representative for Microsoft. Interesting, Chris.
At least I wasn’t the only one. I bet if I would have been more patient, Windows would have found the problem and did the upgrade automatically too. Just finished updating my Surface Pro 2 to Windows Since it was on a domain, I ran the install from a USB. After the install, I checked online for updates and there was a couple for Windows 10 and a firmware update for the surface.
One thing I didn’t like was having to reorganize the start menu since I had it heavily organized on Windows 8. However, after spending some time with it, it works great. It’s pretty much the same but vertical instead of horizontal. I like what I see so far.
It resembles my Windows Phone so much that I feel like consumers who like Win 10 might want to grab a Windows phone as well. On a side note, I wonder if today will set records as the most upgrades of any Desktop OS on launch day. It’s so nice, I’m probably going to upgrade my Samsung laptop when I get home.
