So I started this Chocobo breeding thing, which unfortunately also requires a lot of racing. So I actually just won on my second try with my “good chocobo”, but I still don’t understand at al how this works, and the game’s tutorial also doesn’t help much.

Or keep tapping? Same issue with speed. Square is speed up, X is speed down, I get it, but same question: Do I need to keep tapping the button, or hold? And how do I know when I reach maximum speed? And when I do reach it, do I still need to press the button, or can I just let it go? Not even the tutorial mentions it, so once again: should I hold the buttons, or keep tapping? And can I do it while speeding up? I feel so stupid at times like this.
Also it feels like crap playing like this, the damn chocobo keeps to the left so much that even the camera angle is weird, I see mostly just the side of the whole track rather than forward. This is another reason it’s frustrating, when I’m in automaatic mode, my chocobo loks forward most of the time, but the moment I switch to automatic they go to th left wall.
Well, at leat the sprint function works all the time, and I can actually tell it works since it has a different running animation, and the speed in obviously higher.
There’s a reason it’s not listening when you try to turn bit manually, I think the intelligence stat controls how much it obays you. There isn’t really a way to check the stats of a chocobo aside from speed and stamina. You can see which chocobo has the most of a certain stat in comparison to others at the chocobo farm, but not the number.
To improve intelligence and behavior, feed them certain types of greens. Sylkis greens are the best, though a bit expensive 5, gil. They can be purchased from the Chocobo Sage on the northern continent.
There is no way to check when you’ve reached the limits. You just need to play to get a feel for it. You cannot see the stats I think , but you can talk with Chloe in Chocobo Ranch to see which ones are the best at what. It’s not a very well built mini-game, like most Square mini-games of the time, so it doesn’t work perfectly. Just invest on breading a good chocobo that will get you to the end of all the races you need.
You can do this by feading chocobo’s with the best greens sold by the chocobo sage, the best ones are the most expensive ones. If you use the cheat of holding shoulder buttons to boost stamina the races really aren’t that hard. Do the longer track so you can tire out the other racers, sprinting a lot then just running while your stamina restores.
Pump all your chocobos full of greens, chuck of the two most expensive types from the ranch on your chocobo and it’ll be a lot better.
You’ll get a better boost using the more expensive greens from the sage but it’s a long way to go. This way you can buy and feed, buy and feed. There is a cap to how good a chocobo can become from feeding greens but as with everything else in the racing minigame it’s vague and difficult to determine, If the chocobo doesn’t do a funny dance when feeding then it didn’t improve. It’s longer. Yes the long course is longer and if you’ve got the stats for it the short course is more cost effective per time spent. But if you’ve got a low stats yellow chocobo and you’ve pushed it up to A Class and can’t really keep up with the other racers, switching to the Long course and using the stamina cheat is a good way to win tough races.
